Speaker Bio

An accomplished senior executive and intellectual property attorney, Carmela has a driving passion to improve health and care through collaboration, knowledge translation and industry uptake of research outcomes. Carmela has extensive experience in developing partnerships and fostering collaboration at local, national and international levels. Carmela works with diverse stakeholders such as Federal and State governments, Australian and international universities, industry, health services, consumer organisations and business including start-up, SME and large corporations.

In 2021 alone, Carmela led the successful development of three significant national research collaborative bids:
o Marine Bioproducts Cooperative Research Centre ($59m grant Dept Industry,+$120m cash from 68 partners)
o Aged Care Centre for Growth and Translational Research ($34m tender Dept Health, +$1.2m cash from 73 partners)
o Living Lab trial of the new aged care assessment tool as part of the new Support at Home Program (amount undisclosed)

Most recently, as the Interim CEO of the Aged Care Centre for Growth and Translational Research, Carmela held a critical role in developing the Centre model, establishing and implementing the Centre.
