Biography

Davina is Professor of Nursing in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Edith Cowan University. She is the director of the Centre for Research in Aged Care and holds a VC’s Professorial Fellowship. She is an experienced nurse researcher, teacher, and mentor. Since completing her PhD in 1998 at ECU she has worked in Australia, the UK and the USA garnering almost $10M AUD equivalent. Professor Porock focuses her research and teaching on person-centred care of older adults receiving aged and end-of-life care with a special interest in recognising dying and the transition to end-of-life care.

Whilst working in the USA, Professor Porock developed the MDS Mortality Risk Index to determine likelihood of death in 6-months for aged care residents in order to transition them to palliative care services in a timely fashion. The work was recognised by the American Academy of Nursing for which she was made a fellow. The work has been included in an online catalogue of prognostic calculators hosted by University California San Francisco and has been validated independently by researchers and used successfully by clinicians in residential aged care, hospital, and community settings.
